When dimensions make all the difference

In Project Cargo heavy haulage, weight is not the only determining factor; it is the size of the load that presents the real challenge.

This was demonstrated by a recent shipment managed by Transmec’s Project Cargo team: the movement of a skid (a prefabricated industrial module) enclosed in a wooden crate measuring 9 metres long, 3.7 metres wide, and an impressive 5.01 metres high, with an overall weight of over 22 tonnes.

The extraordinary height—exceeding five metres—made the authorisation process the most complex phase of the operation, requiring 40 working days of administrative paperwork and rigorous technical surveys across regional and local authorities before obtaining the necessary transit permits.

The convoy departed on the night of 3rd August from the province of Brescia heading towards the Port of Marghera.

During the two nights of road transport, the operational team managed the temporary removal of overhead and roadside obstructions along the route in real time, ensuring the cargo's safety and the journey's continuity.

“With dimensions like these, the margin for error is zero. Constant supervision and the ability to resolve any logistical criticalities on the spot are essential, alongside seamless coordination with all parties involved,” explained Christian Randazzo, Project Supervisor for the operation.

At dawn on 5th August, the load reached the Vecon terminal in Marghera, arriving right on schedule for the ship’s berth.

Operations concluded on 7th August with the loading of the module aboard the MV MSC NITA, which set sail for the port of Sohar in Oman. From there, the crate continued its journey by land to the final installation site.

“Meticulous attention to every single centimetre is at the very heart of our work,” added Project Manager Domenico Longano.

“That is how we transform an apparently impossible challenge into a safe and punctual transport.”
