98 tonnes of steel from Italy to India
When cargo dimensions are extraordinary, ready-made solutions do not exist.
In the world of heavy industry, the margin for error is zero.
A weight of 98 tonnes and a diameter of over 7 metres: these are the figures of the extraordinary shipment managed by Transmec Group’s Project Division from Italy to India.
The cargo? Gigantic forged rings; crucial steel components designed to withstand the extreme thermal stress of rotary kilns in the cement industry. A technical challenge that the team transformed into a smooth, secure, and millimetre-precise operation.
The Project team took charge of supervising every single step: from the bureaucratic process for abnormal load permits to cargo lifting, transport, customs clearance, and subsequent stowage using impressive port cranes.
With the aim of locking down safety and streamlining every phase, the journey of the three manufactured components towards the Venetian port followed a tight schedule: a twenty-one-day relay, with a scheduled delivery of one piece every seven days.
Responsiveness and the added value of the service emerge precisely at key moments of the journey, as Hajar Chahboun, Air & Ocean Branch Manager & Trade Lane Manager, explains:
"Normally, the process for components of this magnitude takes at least 35-40 days. We orchestrated the entire reception and port access phase, internal handling, and boarding operations. Our added value was fundamental in providing strategic guidelines and operational support to promptly remove every logistical obstacle in Marghera, ensuring a smooth entry into the port."
Preventing unforeseen events and coordinating port authorities requires impeccable handling control. By maximising efficiency, Transmec optimised the entire global logistics chain, demonstrating how team synergy transforms complex challenges into great achievements.
"In Project shipments, uniqueness is the norm," explains Christian Randazzo, Air & Ocean Project Division Supervisor.
"From an operational standpoint, millimetre-precise planning, the use of special vehicles, and constant monitoring are required to guarantee cargo integrity. With this operation, managed right up to the port of discharge, we proved that even the most critical transport operations can be executed with total safety and punctuality."
An international success towards India that consolidates the Group’s global presence, which Domenico Longano, Air & Ocean Project Division Manager, comments on from a strategic perspective:
"Behind this result lies the hard work and dedication of the Project Division, the spearhead for out-of-gauge cargo logistics. In our sector, there are no ready-made formulas or standard solutions: every oversize shipment is a blank canvas.
“Our approach always starts by studying the specific needs of the client and the individual route, in order to design a completely tailor-made solution. It is highly complex work, which can only be achieved by deploying vertical expertise and, above all, solid field experience."
