Team GB place for Thai boxer George
Continuing success for Transmec UK-sponsored Thai boxer George Rowand has led to his selection for Team GB.
The 13-year-old has been chosen to compete the junior world championships taking place in Bangkok in August.
Being picked to represent his country keeps George on track to fulfil his ambition of competing in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“It’s amazing news. I’m really excited and proud to be joining Team GB,” he said.
“I’ll certainly be training hard and trying to do my best. I am extremely grateful to Transmec for their ongoing support.”
George, who is from Redditch, began Thai boxing at the age of six. He trains five times a week at the town’s Thaitans Martial Arts Academy.
He caught the eye of the selectors after his performances in a series of UK events earlier this year.
Transmec is continuing to help cover George’s competition costs, having also supported him in travelling to Italy to compete in the unified world championships in autumn 2017 when he won both the 44kg and 50kg categories in his age group.
General manager of Transmec UK, John Simkins, said: “George is clearly very talented and also determined to compete at the highest level.
“It’s great to see him going from strength to strength and catching the eye of the national selectors. We wish him the best of luck for the championships in Thailand.”
