Intermodal keeps freight moving
Transmec’s intermodal service has provided an alternative solution for customers during the coronavirus pandemic.
Less affected by the restrictions that have disrupted some truck movements, the service has helped to keep freight moving across Europe and is now running at full capacity.
Operating its own trains from the Group’s dedicated hubs, Transmec offers regular scheduled services across the continent.
As well as its own trains, it can call on a fleet of 800 Huckepack trailers, more than 2,500 containers and 150 swap bodies.
“Having control of our own fleet and facilities has made it much easier for us to switch freight from road to rail in order to accommodate customers’ needs,” explained intermodal manager Ciprian Stiubea.
“Intermodal has provided a valuable strategic alternative throughout the pandemic and has built on the growth we’ve seen in rail freight over the last five years.”
Running to fixed transit times, Transmec operates multiple weekly rail routes between its terminal at Oradea (Romania) and Zeebrugge (Belgium), Piacenza (Italy) and Lodz (Poland).
A further service links Novara (Italy) and Zeebrugge, with onward services throughout northern and southern Europe.
Trains run in both directions with transit times of between 34 and 40 hours.
