Fleet investment proves a driving force

Multi-million pound investments continue to provide a driving force for Transmec’s international road transport operation.

Speed and security form cornerstones of Transmec’s service and the Group has always invested heavily in its fleet, with a policy of renewing trucks every three years.

Over the past five years 36 million euros have been spent on upgrading the international fleet.

Overall truck numbers, which including latest-generation euro 6 tractor units supplied by Scania, Iveco and Volvo, have risen ten per cent since 2015 and now stand at 180.

Upgrades have also been made to the 850-strong fleet of trailers and swap bodies which has increased by more than 30 per cent over the same period.

Serving Transmec’s ever-expanding rail operation, most trailers are intermodal but the Group also owns box, Goods on Hanger (GOH) and extendable trailers as well as hydraulic tailgates.

“Our fleet is always evolving and growing to meet the requirements of the business, which is of course driven by the needs of our customers,” explained Group operations manager, Lucia Grassi.

“Reliability is absolutely vital as is safety and security. Our renewal policy and regular maintenance ensure our fleet is always fit for purpose.”

High levels of security are maintained through continued certification by TAPA (the Transported Asset Protection Association), which ensures the latest and best practices are always implemented.
