Franco Vaccari Buio, nebbia padana, suoni, luci
Campogalliano, Modena dicembre 2005
Qui è previsto un oggetto Flash, ma al momento non hai installato un lettore adeguato. Lo puoi scaricare da qui. Enormous presence can be sensed amid the vague outline of this setting. Access is by torchlight, reserved for those prepared to cede the primacy of sight and venture on a journey of discovery in quest of knowledge via the other senses. "Our culture, especially art in the West," Franco Vaccari explains, "has put a premium on seeing. The new techniques have only added to this visual bulimia. Hence the choice of darkness. It rekindles sense perception which has been crowded out by the demands of sight. Renewed importance is thus given to hearing and above all touch. While sight projects us outwards, darkness makes us implode inwards. The dark lets us regain body-sense, and that puts a different slant on reality. My project aims to provide an opportunity to experience "optic silence", a moment's peace amid the steady barrage of images. I have tried to achieve the physical conditions where a free choice can be made. The scene is one of pitch dark, in which bodily forms are lurking. Those who wish to discover them will have to seek them out, one by one, with the help of an electric torch. In the dark there is no room for mundane ritual or inhibiting convention. We are outside the dimension that can be dominated by present phenomena. We are left to choose, alone." The whole event forms part of an ongoing communications project put on by Transmec Group - an international company specialising in shipping and logistic services, by land, sea and air. In 2003 a performance by Marcello Maloberti marked the opening of the Milan company headquarters at Trucazzano; in 2004 the project "site specific" by the Korean artist Kimsooja was held in the Modena premises at Campogalliano. This is now the third event underscoring the commitment of Transmec Group to supporting contemporary art. Art projects and company philosophy, an exchange of vitality accompanying the rapid trans-formation of present-day society. The event comes from an idea by Mariangela Montecchi, in charge of the group's outside relations, in tandem with Raffaella Cortese, owner of the Cortese Contemporary Art gallery in Milan. The accompanying booklet will contain a critical piece by Valerio Dehò.
